Choco Museo, in Lima’s Historic Center, is a great stop if you like chocolate and want to understand more about everything behind cacao. It’s located right in front of Plaza de Armas, next to the Cathedral, so it’s easy to find if you’re already walking around downtown.
It works as a museum, shop, and workshop space all in one. Admission is free, and you can walk through at your own pace while reading the wall displays that explain the history of cacao in Peru, its origins, and the process that turns it into chocolate. The information is clear and easy to follow, so you learn something new without it feeling overwhelming.
The highlights are the workshops. The most complete one is the “bean-to-bar” workshop, which lasts about two hours and lets you make your own chocolate from scratch: grinding the cacao, mixing ingredients, and molding your own bar. It’s hands-on, fun, and very interactive. There are also short workshops of around 45 minutes, ideal if you’re short on time or just want a quick experience. All workshops have an extra cost, and prices vary depending on the activity and schedule.
The shop is also worth checking out. You’ll find chocolate bars, bonbons, cacao products, and several items made with Peruvian ingredients. We picked up the coffee jam and the choco maca, two unique combinations that blend local flavors with chocolate and make great treats to take home or gift.
Choco Museo isn’t only in Lima. They have other locations across Peru, including Miraflores in Lima and several branches in Cusco. These other spots offer similar workshops and products, so if you’re exploring more of the country and want the same chocolate experience, you’ll likely find a Choco Museo nearby.
Overall, it’s a well-designed space that’s easy to explore and a nice add-on if you’re already visiting downtown Lima. It’s a good, different kind of plan—especially for anyone who enjoys cacao as much as coffee and likes knowing where their products come from.
